Old Trafford or The Liberty Stadium? April 20, 2008

Thats what international stars such as Ivan Campo, James McFadden and David Healy will be thinking right now. With just 3 games left in the Premiership the relegation battle has really kicked off. Bolton’s win at Middlesborough on Saturday was crucial, as was Fulham’s and Birmingham’s dismal defeats. But who is staying up and will be taking on the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Rio at Old Trafford next season? And who will be battling against Welsh side Swansea City in the Championship, on mud-ridden pitches and shed-like stadiums?
Well, Derby are down and out. Have been for weeks. Fulham, 5 points drift, meaning if they realistically want to stay up, they need to beat Man City, Birmingham and Portsmouth. Jimmy Bullard and co are 1/40 to go down, so no value there. The dreaded third relegation place is right up for grabs though.
It is currently held by Birmingham, who are 1 point behind Reading and Bolton. Sunderland, Middlesborough and Wigan aren’t safe just yet, but are 5 points clear of the relegation zone. Birmingham face two home games against Liverpool and Blackburn, which are not easy to say the least. Inbetween they play at Fulham, could be crucial. Birmingham are 11/8 to go down.Bolton are 13/8 to get relegated. They have two VERY HARD away games at Spurs and Chelsea, sandwiched by a must win match at home to Sunderland.Reading are 2/1 but will fancy their run-in, as they face Wigan, Tottenham and Derby.

Other canidates for the drop are Sunderland 28/1, Wigan/Middlesborough 50/1.

My prediction : has to be Birmingham

So tomorrow we have the start of this years snooker Crucible. Always exciting, always worth a punt. This year you have the same old boy as the favourite. Yes, you got it, Ronnie O’Sullivan. He is priced at 3/1, which is not bad value.Joint second favourites with the bookies this year are Steven Maguire and Mark Selby, two young up and coming talents. 11/2.
Not a chance in my opinion. You look further down and you have the tournament old boys, Higgins 10/1, Doherty and Ebdon 25/1, Williams and Hendry 33/1. All in with a shout. But my tip this year, Ding Junhui. 10/1. He has got what it takes? What do you think?
See above to view the best bits of the 2006 Snooker World Championships at the Crucible, between Greame Dott and Peter Ebdon, which resulted in Dott winning the match 18-14 and holding the Snooker World Cup for the first time.

Ronaldo heads PFA list…. April 11, 2008

So the nominations for the 2008 PFA Footballer of the Year are announced.  6 players, 1 suprise package. You obviously have Cristiano Ronaldo (4/9), the big favourite. Liverpool duo Fernando Torres (3/1) and Steven Gerrard (5/1) make the list as do Arsenal pair Emmanuel Adebayor (5/1) and Cesc Fabregas (6/1).
And the suprise package, David James (9/1). To be fair to the Pompey keeper, he has been immense. And it is great that he gets noticed. But for me, there is going to be no other winner than Ronaldo. The best player in the world at the moment by a mile. A few top players will be upset not being in the list. Rio Ferdinand has had his best season of his career and where are all the Chelsea players?

Second in the Premiership, still have a very good chance of winning the title yet not one of their squad make the top 6. Who do you think deserves the crown? Also, another thing on everyone’s mind is the “Premiership team of the year”. This is my opinon:

  • James
  • Brown, Vidic, Ferdinand, Carragher
  • Ronaldo, Fabregas, Gerrard, Cole
  • Torres, Adebayor

What do you think?

The Miami Open last week seemed a bit too much for Michail Youznhy. Check this out…

But, amazingly, he went on to win the game! However, the next round he crumbled and did go out. But, have you ever seen anything like that before?????

Davenydenko went on the win the tournament, beating Nadal in the final, easily! Federer’s poor run of form continued, this week losing to Andy Roddick in three sets. Tennis has changed this year, its not all one way, or should i say two way if you want to include Nadal…..

Murray to win Wimbledon, 14/1. COME ON! Get behind him……

Scrolling through the latest odds on www.willhill.com, I come across the odds for the winner of the Sports Personality of the Year award, decided in December some 9 months away! To be honest it made me laugh. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN FROM NOW TO THEN.
The list of sportsmen and woman include:

  • Lewis Hamilton (Motor Racing)
  • Tom Daley (Diving)
  • Andy Murray (Tennis)
  • Ricky Hatton (Boxing)
  • Justin Rose ( Golf )
  • all the way down to 100/1 shot John Higgins (Snooker)
This really proves that nowadays you can bet on anything and everything. And as u can, I have a tip.Andy Murray 7/1. Watch him win Wimbledon!!!

Djoko continues quest to take over the world… March 25, 2008

Novak Djokovic won the Pacific Open on Sunday, beating Mardy Fish in the final two sets to one. Fish, playing on his home turf, had a superb tournament. On his way to the final he did not only beat, but destroyed world number 1 Roger Federer. In the other semi, Djoko beat world number two Rafa Nadal.

Djoko is the best player in the world at the moment. He is now winning big titles, as opposed to just competing for them as he did last year. He has closed the gap on Federer and Nadal and by the end of 2008 could quite easily be the world number 2.

But, is this the end of the road for Federer? Recently, he has been losing games that a year ago, he would not even think about losing a set! He has not won a title in 2008 yet, which is astonishing. As for Nadal, his form since the French Open in 2007 has not been upto scratch.

2008, so far, has been Djoko’s year. And will continue to be so. Although not known to be a good grasscourt player, Djoko to win Wimbledon at 3/1 look good. Federer was 4/9 to win Wimbledon a few months back. Now, 11/10. You also have home favourite Andy Murray at 14/1, Nadal 8/1 or maybe even outsiders such as Nalbandian 20/1, Hewitt 50/1 or Ferrero 150/1. Whose your pick?

7 year old signs for Everton… March 20, 2008

It was a great night of football on Wednesday. Spurs and Chelsea drawing 4-4 at White Hart Lane, in which has to go down as the game of the season so far. You could have backed that scoreline at 100/1. Did anyone? No, thought not! Also, Man United comfortably beat relegation-bound Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at Old Trafford, that man Ronaldo scoring both goals. But what really shocked me today was something I read in the Daily Star….
“Everton have snapped up a potential star of the future in seven-year-old goalkeeper Harry Yates, who was also wanted by Liverpool and Manchester United.”
How can you be a potential superstar at the age of seven? An absolute joke in my opinon. It is as if this boy is now a robot ; he caught a ball his dad threw at him one day in the lounge and therefore he has talent? For the next ten years, his parents and Everton Football Club are going to try and train his boy up to become a professional! At the age of seven, is this not just a step too far? Talk about ruining a childs childhood. What do you think of this?

Quad still on for Rangers March 16, 2008

Rangers dreams of the quadruple were kept on track this afternoon, but only just! A penalty shoot-out win in the CIS Insurance Cup final against Dundee Utd was trophy 1 out of a possible 4 captured. The Glasgow side were twice behind, once in normal time and once in extra time, but striker Kris Boyd equalised twice to send the game into the dreaded penalty shoot-out. And it was Boyd who scored the winning penalty, given Rangers a 3-2 win. Now just the League, Scottish Cup and UEFA Cup to go!
As for the English Premiership, Fulham and Wigan picked up massive wins in their relegation fights. Fulham defeated Everton 1-0 whilst Wigan beat fellow strugglers Bolton by the same scoreline. In the day’s other game, Man City came from behind to beat Tottenham 2-1.

And its a big day for you tennis fans today. The first big day of the Indian Wells Mens singles kicks off, as the seeds enter the draw after first round byes. A few off my personal favourites are in action tonight, with Ivo Karlovic (2/7) taking on Rik De Voest, Juan Carlos Ferrero (8/11) playing Tommy Johannson and Brit Andrew Murray (1/6) up against Jurgen Melzer. A £10 treble here would see you scoop a modest £26. Worth a punt?

Top-shots take a fall… March 15, 2008

What a strange day in English football. The 4 teams who led each of the 4 leagues failed to win, and as a consquence, 3 of these got knocked off the top. Arsenal knicked a draw at home to Middlesborough thanks to a late Kolo Toure goal, but it’s not enough to stop Man United going top. Bristol City lost at home to Plymouth as Stoke City take over the reigns in the Championship. In League 2, Peterborough could only manage a goaless draw at home to Notts County. League 1’s toppers Swansea also lost, got thrashed in fact 4-2 at Northampton. However, the Welsh side stay top, just!

As a result, bookies have been busy picking their favourites for each of the leagues. As we speak, they stand at…..

Premiership : Manchester United1/2, Arsenal and Chelsea 7/2

Championship : West Brom 7/4, Stoke 5/2, Watford 11/4, Bristol City 11/2

League 1 : Swansea 2/9, Carlisle and Doncaster 6/1

League 2 : MK Dons 4/6, Peterborough 7/4

My pick : Manchester United, Stoke, Swansea, MK Dons

 …..a £10 stake returns over £100

What a few weeks our English clubs have had in Europe. Arsenal destroy AC Milan at the San Siro; Liverpool do the same against Inter a week later. Manchester United and Chelsea record easy home wins after drawing away at Lyon and Olympiacos respectively. The result ; four English teams in the Champions League Quarter Finals. And today the draw was made:
ARSENAL v LIVERPOOL

Fenerbahce v CHELSEA

Schalke v Barcelona

MANCHESTER UNITED v Roma

Man United and Barcelona are joint favourites with the bookies, priced 3/1.  We then have Chelsea 7/2, Arsenal 5/1 and Liverpool 7/1. Fancy any of them? But for me, the value bet has to be Roma, priced 14/1. Second in the Italian league, defeated Spanish giants Real Madrid home and away last round, surely worth a punt? My sensible bet would be Man United at 3/1, but a small wager on the seemingly ‘very’ unfancied Roma is certainly worth a shout.
