Ronaldo heads PFA list…. April 11, 2008

So the nominations for the 2008 PFA Footballer of the Year are announced.  6 players, 1 suprise package. You obviously have Cristiano Ronaldo (4/9), the big favourite. Liverpool duo Fernando Torres (3/1) and Steven Gerrard (5/1) make the list as do Arsenal pair Emmanuel Adebayor (5/1) and Cesc Fabregas (6/1).
And the suprise package, David James (9/1). To be fair to the Pompey keeper, he has been immense. And it is great that he gets noticed. But for me, there is going to be no other winner than Ronaldo. The best player in the world at the moment by a mile. A few top players will be upset not being in the list. Rio Ferdinand has had his best season of his career and where are all the Chelsea players?

Second in the Premiership, still have a very good chance of winning the title yet not one of their squad make the top 6. Who do you think deserves the crown? Also, another thing on everyone’s mind is the “Premiership team of the year”. This is my opinon:

  • James
  • Brown, Vidic, Ferdinand, Carragher
  • Ronaldo, Fabregas, Gerrard, Cole
  • Torres, Adebayor

What do you think?

Yea i think it is quite obviously that Ronaldo will take the title. Know one is close to him this year. I am quite surprised about who was included in the players of the year. There was no room for Vidic which surprised me. I think Gerrard shouldn’t be in there because he hasn’t actually done that much this season. Other players i might expect is maybe Robbie Keane i think he has had a good season as has Rooney.

Team of the year:
James

Sagna, Ferdinand, Vidic, Cole

Ronaldo, Fabregas, Gerrard,

Torres, Rooney, Keane

First of all I would like to say Liverpool were very lucky to qualify for the semi’s of the champions league, once again the consistancy of refereeing decisions has been a major talking point. Obviously we must accept that people are going to make mistakes once in a while, but the difference between the penalty Arsenal were not given, and the ‘penalty’ Liverpool were given can only be described as laughable. Surely with so much riding on these major decisions, some form of video assistance should be incorporated into the game to ensure teams are not let down by human error. I have to say though that Liverpool looked very poor across the 2 legs and although they have qualified I felt it was undeserved and a bet on Chelsea to make it through to the final would be easy money.

Secondly well done on the website, I am following the daily updates and sometimes even having a punt on your tips! I have to say im about even thus far and hopefully you can send a few winners this way in the coming weeks!

Finally I am rather suprised at James’ inclusion in the nominations, not due to his form, but because goalkeepers are rarely awarded for showing outstanding form across a season. A deserved nomination in my eyes! Surely reclaiming the role of England’s number one keeper at such a late stage in your career has to put James in some peoples minds as a possible winner of the award?

The safe bet would be to back Ronaldo to win this as I do not feel anybody else stands a chance of winning the award. After a storming campaign last season nobody dreamt he could re-create the same kind of form again, but he has taken it up another level and pushed himself into the realms of the greats. He may have short odds but do not be put off by this, at the end of the day a winner is a winner and whether the odds are 4/9 or 11/1 you are still making a profit. Earlier in the season Fabregas looked to have wrapped this award up, but unfortunately his form has dipped and in all honestly I think this has been a key facor in Arsenal’s recent run of bad results.

Keep up the good work and lets keep the tips coming! I need some winners!

It’s a two horse race between Ronaldo and Torres. Both have been superb, but to be fair how can you realistically look any further than Ronaldo? odds of 4/9 should be snapped up right this second. Get £900 on it or end it all instantly.

Small link, but what about the young player of the year award, and more importantly, why hasn’t David Bentley been listed? He’s been in word-class form this year and is by and far an away the obvious choice for England on the right. I get the feeling hes still being punished for shunning the u21’s, which ‘obviously’ an awful decision. It’s not as if as if hes been playing realy well this season and its stopped him getting into the senior squad. Oh wait….
